“The Coliseum” Awaits As World’s Greenest Golfing Comp Set For Tee-Off

In just a few short weeks, one of the first PGA Tour events of the year gets underway: The Waste Management Phoenix Open. Often considered one of the most iconic sporting events of the year, it’s the legendary “Coliseum” on the 16th hole, the loudest hole in golf, that sets this Open apart.

However, while the roars of the crowd are certainly impressive, we’re more amazed by the green credentials the event boasts. With upwards of 600,000 fans flocking to the course, it’s the world’s largest zero-waste event, and sustainability plays a vital role in every aspect of the show.

Keeping it green

Although the pros will be focusing on the putting greens, the team behind the WMPO is fully focused on green initiatives. The event is completely carbon neutral, produces zero waste, and has a balanced water footprint, making it one of the greenest sporting events in the world.

Some of the most impressive figures from the event each year include:

-          100% of waste recovered (63.5% recycled, 24.5% composted, 10.3% converted to energy, 1.7% donated)

-          Over 170 pounds of wine and liquor bottles converted into reusable glasses each year.

-          4,060 pounds of unused food donated to local non-profits

-          60 solar-powered compactors collecting recycling and composting materials.

The event is also big on promoting awareness of sustainability through its #GreenOut campaign, which encourages everyone to wear their best green clothing. For every player, caddie, fan, volunteer, and service animal who sports green will see event sponsors donate to non-profits supporting green issues.

Final thoughts

Here at the Highland Cleaning Company, we’re committed to reducing our impact on the environment, and it’s amazing to see how such a large-scale event can embrace true sustainability. We can’t wait to see what the 2024 event has in store!
